We have a special interview today with Jennie! I met her through twitter. She had mentioned how she was en route for her first half and got hit by a car and now is back training for her next challenge so I just HAD to hear more about her!
What do you do for a living?
I am a 3rd grade teacher.
How did you get into running?
I started running last year to help with weight lose and then a friend asked me to do a 5K with her. Once I completed the 5K I was hooked and signed up for more races!
My first 10K! Not sure why I was showing off my guns (feeling strong?! lol) but the sign on my back said “In Honor of my Father”. This was a Lance Armstrong Livestrong 10K in Philly and my father is a survivor of cancer. I was so proud and so was my dad!
I know you were hit by a car before you could run your first half marathon. When and how did you get by a car? How hurt were you? How did you deal with recovering? How did this affect your running?
I was heading out for a long run on a Saturday at the end of March and was on one side of the road while the driver (an 86-year old man!) was at a Stop sign on the opposite side. No one was coming to the left and the right of me and he was completely stopped at the stop sign. I began to cross the road and he pulled out and turned left and hit me on my left side. I actually landed on the hood and I actually don’t even think he saw me right away because it took him a few seconds to stop! I was able to roll off of the hood and land on my feet and stumble off to the sidewalk. He admitted to the police officer that he did not see me and should probably not be driving (I agree!).
Luckily, I was only badly bruised but it definitly shook me up. I thought the bruise would heal quickly (like any other bruise) and I was anxious to get back out on the pavement. (I have NO patience! When I want to run, I WANT TO RUN!) After 2 weeks of rest, I started to become depressed that I couldn’t run. I had an X-ray done just to be sure there was no other damage and was reassured it was just a bad bruise.
After about 3 weeks of no running I slowly began running again. Since the accident I am extra careful about crossing roads an making sure that drivers see me! Before the accident, I was one of those people that always said, “that would never happen to me!” Well, I was proven wrong…and it happened to me! Unfortunately, I was not able to run the half-marathon that I had planned on doing on April 17th but I am planning on doing one on May 15th. In the midst of recovering I also got the ambition to register for my first FULL marathon in October in Baltimore (My favorite city).
What are your running goals?
Definitely right now I am focusing on the half marathon in 3 weeks and then my ultimate goal is to complete the full marathon. When I started running I told everyone that I was jst doing it for fun and would never attempt a half or full. Fortunately, I am a very ambitious person an when I set my mind on something and set a goal for myself, I do everything I possibly can to achieve it!
This is my boyfriend, Keith. He is the person that supports me no matter what. He believes I can do anything (more than I believe so)!
What are some other hobbies of yours besides running?
I love cooking and baking. I have also become addicted to reading blogs of other runners and health-conscious people, like lilmissrunsine! 🙂 I spend a lot of time (maybe too much!) reading those now!
What is one strange/weird fact about you?
I have an identical twin sister! We are complete opposites and se used to think I am crazy for running but she is starting to get into it herself and wants to do a 5K with me this summer!
Thanks Jennie for taking the time to tell us a little about you!
I am so pumped that you are going to keep up the running and not let something like getting hit by a car stop you! Mary the Bear will be waiting for you for your first marathon! 🙂
