My new best friend told me the cold, hard truth.

March 9, 2012

My new best friend told me the cold, hard truth. I have scar tissue build up on my plantar fascia, achilles and calf. When tendons get overused or pronate, they can slowly tear. In my case, I think it was a combination of the hillier runs and that I needed new running shoes. Once the tendons start to tear, scar tissue builds up to try to heal the areas. But this scar tissue isn’t as strong and healthy as regular tissue. It can cause the tendons to tighten up. My tendons should be more flexible and longer, but the range of motion is restricted and shortened due to the scar tissue build up.  [Sources: Plantar Fasciitis: Arch Nemesis]

In order to fix this, I have to be strict with my foam rolling, foot rolling, icing and PT visits. My PT said I was “on the good side of bad” since I am attacking it as soon as I felt a lot of pain. I’m not sure how my performance will be at Boston Marathon, but I am just going to take it day by day!

Today is a rest day and also a VACATION day.  Dave and I took a day trip to Portsmouth, NH and were walking around the shops.  We stopped by Gas Lamp Co. and grabbed lunch.  I got the salmon burger, which tasted fresh and delicious.

After fueling up, we continued to walk around.  I got a few shirts in a second hand store that I’m excited to wear, but mostly just window shopped.  Towards the end of our trip, we came across Denimrack.  Dave has been looking for some new skinny jeans and has been having problems finding some that are skinny enough for him, so we went in.  He found a pair he thought were good.  I said, “I don’t know if these are womens or not…” (there was a sign that said “Women’s jeans 50% off” right above them.  Dave said, “No I think they are mens.”

Dave tried them on.  He gave out this quirky laugh while he was in the fitting room.  He came out and said, “I think these are women’s jeans!”  The pockets were not deep, the crotch didn’t fit too well, and the back pocket detail included some rhinestones.  I started CRACKING up soooo much.  He ran into the fitting room before I could snap a picture.  But let’s just say he looked like this:

I’m just kidding of course, they weren’t this bad…but really…they were!  After all that waking around, I had NO pain in my foot! I am excited to see how my 17 miler goes tomorrow!

Have you caught an injury before it got too bad?

I’ve been pretty lucky up until now and haven’t been injured.  I had some ITB issues after my first half marathon but my old best friend helped me out with that issue.

Have you waited too long where an injury got really bad?

Luckily no!

Do you ever shop in second hand stores?

I haven’t actually bought a lot in second hand stores, but found a few things I liked today!

Do you like skinny jeans?

I LOVE them!  The most fun is probably trying to get into them after they are dried in the dryer.  It’s like the skinny jean dance!
