This is not a slip and slide…

…this is yoga class!

Despite the advice a friend of mine gave me for a good yoga mat, I decided to go to the cheaper route.  Last night I went to Back Bay Yoga for a Vinyasa class, I was doing my first downward dog when my hands started to slide forward…and not stop.  Eek!  Was I going to land on flat on my face?  No-I had grabbed my yoga bag and put the strap underneath my hands to provide more friction between the mat and my hands.  But I realized why the more affordable mat was was more affordable!

I did purchase a yoga towel from Target that I think I really need to start remembering to bring with me so that I can prevent some of this slipping.  Once I start to go more consistently, I am going to look into a Jade or Manduka mat.  I want to be able to do some of these moves someday and I can’t do them on a slip and slide mat!

My legs feel so much better after the yoga class last night and I felt more calm as well.  I’m looking forward to including more yoga in my life and help me become a healthier person and better runner!

I was reading the Spring/Summer 2012 Runner’s World’s article “Recovery the Right Way” by Gordy Megroz and it mentions you shouldn’t stretch, you should do yoga!  Why?  Because dynamic stretching can provide more benefits and reduce delayed onset muscle soreness more so than static stretching.  Yoga engages muscles while stretching others.  This brings me to some new goals.

Now that Boston Marathon is done, I am going to start to:

  • Practice more yoga (those moves won’t come just naturally!)
  • Do more strength training
  • Transition to a lighter weight running shoe
  • Get ready to kick the a spring marathon’s butt
What are some of your goals?

What kind of yoga mat do you like?

Have you ever fallen in yoga class?

How have you made yoga more a part of your life?

In my experience, the Manduka is rather slippery and you will always need some kind of towel (even after spending the 80+ bucks to "invest" in it!) Jades are good solid mats for moderate sweaters and should work great for the average practitioner. Either way, a Yogitoes is the best thing ever for grip (I fold up the bottom third since my feet don't need a towel) and personally, once I started using it I never went back! They are also easy to just toss in the wash and don't take any extra care.

As a side note – it's great combing different activities and cross-training! For me it's yoga mainly, and more recently I've added bike riding. It's amazing how one activity can inform you of the other and vice versa.

I purchased The Mat from Lululemon and I don't even need a yoga towel for Hip Hop Yoga anymore! I just bring one to wipe the sweat off me since I'm not slipping all over my mat.

  3. Definitely also look at The Mat from lululemon. I've taken it to every class I've done the past three months and I haven't slipped ONCE! It's known for being sticky and is about $20-$30 less than the Manduka. I switched over from my Jade mat because after two years I was started to slip on that one. Hopefully this helps! I only ever need to bring a Yogitoes when I'm doing a very hot yoga class or Bikram.
