Can you picture me singing the Joe Budden “Pump It Up” song? ’Cuz I totally was when I wrote this post title!
Some people ask me if I ever frown or if I’m ever not cheery. Ask Dave, he can tell you, I’m not always giggly! Walking home from the T yesterday, I got a little sad (unlike two days ago when I felt like it was Christmas). My hips and back seemed in so much pain all day. All I want to do is run or workout. I thought, “Should I bail on Kristina?” I told myself that I can still go, but if I feel like I’m in pain to just stop. I got home, and I decided to eat some snacks…it started off by two slices of pepper jack cheese. Then it was a hard boiled egg. Then I wanted more cheese…2 more slices. Then I wanted another hard boiled egg. Then I wanted a CADBURY CREME EGG!
I felt like I was going a little crazy, but then I knew I had fueled, so I HAD to go try to lift. First we did a warmup. Kristina did the elliptical and I did the bike for 5 min. My hips were sore, so I went SLOW. We got off and then did some pull ups and dips. Did this give me a big “HEY Jess-you have NO upper body strength”-smack in the face.
Next we headed upstairs to do some abs. One of my favorites! We did various planks, some exercises involving the bosu ball, and some leg lifts. We ended with some more arm exercises that I was actually able to do (with very light weights). And guess what?! Throughout the workout, my hips didn’t hurt! They actually felt energized! They are saying “Jess-work me out! I want to get strong!”
5 minutes warmup on bike
10 assisted dips
10 assisted pullups
1 minute plank (straight, leg lifts, knee bends for 15 sec each)
30 second side planks
30 seconds pushups (knees)
30 seconds leg throws
3 x 5 BOSU pushups (straight leg) + 13 pattycake planks
45 seconds one-legged kicking bridge per leg
15 seconds reverse plank
2 x 10 hamstrings on ball + 5 pikes on ball + 10 leg throws with stability ball
1 minute wall sit
2 x 10 rows (6kg kettlebell)
10 kettlebell waving around your head with one knee on blue disc
2 x 10 triceps extensions (15 lbs)
I was now excited! So, Kristina and I decided we want to try to do strength at the gym 3 times a week. We got this!
After our workout, we visited Blue Shirt Cafe for some juice. I got the Creative Cocktail with pineapple, pear, mint, and wheatgrass. It was delicious!
So what started as a sad walk to my apartment ended in a happy, optimistic night. I am really excited on some new adventures into strength work. I am going to get in shape for Tough Mudder and just to become a stronger runner.
I made an appointment with my doctor for this Friday to get a professional opinion and confirm that it is ok for me to do strengthening now. I am pretty pumped because it seems like my hips just start burn or feel pain when I’m sitting on my tush for 8 hours or more a day. Otherwise, they still hurt but aren’t in a ton of pain. Which means I can get one of these to walk while I work?
What is your favorite pre-workout snack?
Usually I like to have a bagel. Today was just one of those days where I needed what I was craving!
Does working out help you get into a better mood?
