Being a Woman Engineer and High School Jess

July 20, 2012

I really want to get my butt in gear and start exercising in the morning but I didn’t even attempt that this morning.  I was so exhausted from work the past few days on site and my hips were actually hurting a lot yesterday.

I was going up and down a ladder all day lifting up ceiling tiles to find out where the piping was for a hospital renovation we are working on. It was kind of fun but got really tiring towards the end. All the guys working at the hospital who walked by me kept asking me what I was doing, if I wanted them to hold the ladder for me, said I was too tiny to carry the ladder and asked if I needed help moving the ladder, said that we need more women engineers, and someone even went and got me eye goggles to protect them from debris that may fall from the ceiling. My male coworkers said they never had anyone offer them any of that! So I kidded around that I never did work, I just had the guys do it all (which I would never stand for because I like to do things for myself, but it was funny to laugh about).

While I was at the job site, Ashley sent me an old school pic from high school.  Yup…for some reason we thought it might be funny to put book socks on out head…clearly I was pretty cool!  If only the guys had known this is what I used to do with my free time…

Maybe this picture reminded me of a swim cap because I brought my swim gear and hope to get a good workout in after work!  I can’t believe I WANT to go swimming.  Before you know it, you will be calling me Little Miss Swimshine!

Happy Friday all!

If you are a woman in a male dominated field, do you have any funny stories?

I had a guy tell me he wanted to propose to me (unfortunately he was really awkward and creepy about it). I think it was because I was talking about running, MMA, cars and other guy stuff since all the other people on the trip were guys and I don’t know sports well! I knew guy talk because going to engineering school, there are mostly guys and because I hung out with Dave and his friends do much that it just didn’t phase me.  He got really excited and was impressed and decided to tell me multiple times during the trip that he wanted to put a ring on it.  No thank you!

Did you and your high school friends do silly things?

Have we stopped doing silly things is probably a more appropriate question!

  1. Good For you on the great attitude. I worked as an engineer for a while, now I'm a math instructor (also somewhat male dominated) – but man, some men can be oddly inappropriate. Thankfully, I've never had anything that was ill intent… but a few things that came off pretty awkward.

  2. I work in a male dominated field too (engineer), and when I was single I loved it. lol When I got married I really couldn't stand being the only girl anymore and I hate the attention that comes with it. Ah well.

  3. I'm a chemical engineer and I'm the only woman in my project group at work. I don't mind though, they all listen to me! :)
