Healthworks Body Pump

October 26, 2012

Last night Emma and I headed to the Back Bay Healthwork’s Body Pump class.  We didn’t really know what to expect-I just knew that I’ve heard great things!

We first entered the room and there were all the aerobic steps set up with mats on top and some weights nearby.  Not knowing what was going on, we found spots that had no ticket on them (you need a ticket to reserve a spot in the class).   The instructor had told Emma and I that the stations we were at were already set up by people but we didn’t know what this meant exactly-did it mean that we should use them or that it was someone else’s station?!  It soon became clear what she meant when another member walked in just as the class was starting, seemed aggravated and told Emma, “I had set that up…”  Emma had already changed all the weights to lighter ones so the girl went to set up a new station.  Oops!  We had thought the stations were pre-set up for the class.

The class started and the I was kind of surprised that the instructor didn’t ask if it was anyone’s first time.  In most fitness classes that I attend the instructor will see if there are any new people who may need a little more instruction.  Well this class must be all regulars because there was none of that!  Emma and I watched the others around us and quickly caught on, but we realized our judgement for weight was not always the best.

In the end, the workout was great-despite the awkward start-and Emma and I would like to try it again.  We loved that we were working our arms to jelly and squatting it out like machines.  We both need to build strength and are more motivated to do so if we are in a class with upbeat music.  If I were a full time Healthworks member I would definitely take advantage of these classes.  If you are a n00b like me, just remember that you may have to be a quick learner if it’s your first class, set up your own station, and maybe use the lighter weights until you know what your limits are!

Oh but the best part of the night?  Before class when I was walking up the stairs to the gym and some woman goes, “I LOVE YOUR HEADBAND!!! IT’S SO SPARKLY!!” Thank you Sparkly Soul!  And also a big thanks to YogaVibes for my new tank!

Today is a rest day for me.  I am going to do a YogaVibes video when I get home from work to loosen up my legs, piriformis and hips.  They have been super tight lately from working them out hard and then sitting all day!  Then, it’s time for me to be lazy and spend time with Dave!

Are you ever nervous to try a new class?

I may come off like I’m not nervous, but I definitely am!  I never know what to expect and am nervous that I won’t be able to do what I am supposed to!

Do you have a specific night that you and your significant other do something?

Fridays are our date nights!  It’s crazy that we live together but we are so busy throughout the week that we don’t get to spend a lot of quality time together!
