Healthworks Cardio Strike Class Kicks my Butt!

October 24, 2012

If you are a long time reader, you know that Dave and I call reality checks “reality bullets”.  Whenever we shoot a reality bullet at the other person we make sound effects and act like we are in action films. Why am I telling you this? Because I had a reality bullet last night at the Cambridge Healthworks cardio strike class…a reality bullet that I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO COORDINATION!

Good thing I am not insecure and afraid of making myself a fool on the real dance floor or in this case the workout floor!  Within the first 30 seconds of the class I just smiled and laughed at myself in this class as I tried to keep up with the fast paced moves that Loralee, the sub for the class, had us do.

I actually had no idea what this class was. I decided, “Hey, I am going to just walk into this class and try it. Luckily, a current Healthworks member, Bridget was there because I was asking her a million questions like…

  • What is the class like?
  • Did she like it?
  • Did we need any equipment?
  • Where should I stand?!

Bridget said it was amazing and you felt badass after doing it.  Sounded perfect for me! Healthworks has descriptions of all their classes so I looked up the official info which said that the class “utilizes movements from various martial arts disciplines to strengthen and tone while also increasing the heart rate. The class may also feature hi/low movements as well as Boxing techniques.”

Let me tell you-I got one heck of a workout and I definitely felt badass (once I could actually get the move somewhat correct).  I had taken a boxing class in high school and I had forgotten just how tiring it can be to punch the air!  My arms were dying towards the end of the workout.  We were in constant movement and always keeping our heart rate high.  Overall this was a class I’d definitely go to again-though I may not have time because I want to try as many classes as I can!

The only bad thing was that I was actually starting to feel a little faint towards the end of the workout because I didn’t have my usual pre-workout snack.  I was SO glad that I had brought some Nuun with me for my water.  The electrolytes helped me recover and prevent some fainting.  I’ll be sure to fuel tonight before my workout with some of my fellow team members.

PS. I’m SO proud of Erin!!! I was sitting watching New Girl and then all of a sudden saw this tweet:

She isn’t a runner (despite her “runner’s knee”), and I love that she is starting to enjoy running and work on making it a habit!  Maybe someday I can run with her when she does her first 5k!  In the meantime, she is going to be joining me at some of the other Healthworks classes to become a lean, mean workout machine!

Have you ever had a “reality bullet” during a workout or a race?

After Boston Marathon I realized I’m not invincible and I can get injured.  I realized I need to strengthen my entire body to become a better runner and athlete as a whole.

Do you like to try new classes?

YES!  My goal is to try EVERY class at Healthworks!  Can I do it?  Are you even thinking that there is any other answer but yes?  Ok, I guess I may have to miss a few since some of the small group drop-ins will cost me money and I’m a cheap-o…but I am going to try my best to attend as many of the Healthworks classes as I can!
