Reebok CrossFit Back Bay

October 31, 2012

Reebok CrossFit Back Bay is hosting the Reebok November On Ramp Program which is 2 weeks of 3 classes per week.  The program is designed to introduce you to CrossFit movements with the help of certified coaches and staff all for only $50. This seemed like a really good deal since a 3 class week costs you a monthly rate of $229.00 at minimum.

Unfortunately, Dave and I probably won’t become members right now because we are trying to save some money and I tend to fill up my plate with too many things too fast.  However, I have been dying to find out what CrossFit is all about and learn the proper form so this On Ramp program is perfect!  I have friends that rave that CrossFit is the best and also friends that rave that CrossFit is the worst for you-don’t do it. Well, it’s time for me to get educated and make the decision of what is right for me!

We missed our first class on Monday due to Hurricane Sandy but were able to make it on Tuesday morning bright and early!  Yes I said “Dave and I” because I convinced him to get up early and work out.  I love that Dave is willing to try new things, even if sometimes I have to bug him a few times.  Though surprisingly, I only had to ask once and he said he would try CrossFit!

We got to the gym early and were able to talk a bit with our trainers for the day, Bern Prince and Marisa.  Marisa told me that she runs marathons but CrossFit is more her focus nowadays.  We also met Lauren Scheinfeldt who I had been emailing back and forth about the On-Ramp program.  She was super friendly and made us feel at home in the gym.

Dave and I had some time to kill so Bern asked us if we knew how to foam roll…is that even a question?  I love that thing! Once the other class participants showed up, Bern started a group stretch session.  This included sitting on a small rubber ball (a little larger than a golf ball) and started to roll out our piriformis and whatever else we could make contact with.  This felt amazing and I may have to do this at home with a golf ball!

One part that I liked about the class was that we had introductions to get everyone little more comfortable with everyone else in the class.  I thought this was a nice touch because it’s always nice to know who you are working out with!  The best was when I introduced myself and said what I did this past weekend because Dave then said, “I’m her boyfriend and I do what she does.”  Bern laughed and said that Dave is a good boyfriend!  I agree!  Though, I had to remind Dave to actually mention his name!

Next, we were introduced to the concept of a Workout of the Day (WOD) and the screen where everyone’s stats were.  We walked through each move with Bern and Marisa and then it was time to put he pedal to the metal…

WOD 10/30/12
500 m row
50 air squats
40 crunches
20 push ups (I did them kneeling)
30 box jumps (I used 3-45 lb weights to jump onto)
10 pull ups (I used the rings and stood on the floor)
Total Time: 8:30

I tried to use the modifications where I thought I might need them because I wasn’t sure how my body would react to this workout.  I ended up feeling pretty good I’m looking forward to not only learning more but also making some friends with the group we are working out with.  It was nice to see that it is such an encouraging environment and we push one another to improve.

Dave and I are having fun doing something new and pushing ourselves physically and mentally in a way we haven’t before!

Are you a CrossFit fan or think its crazy? Why?

Do you like to try something out before making a judgement?
