Don’t tell my Healthworks Workplace Warrior Challenge team…but I attended a class this morning, the same day as our final fitness assessment! As part of the challenge we were given so many drop-in classes and I had 2 left. This Pilates/strength fusion class was the only class that really fit into my schedule so I decided to risk taking it.
From the sounds of it most of the women who attend the class are regulars because the instructor Kimberly knew everyone’s name and asked where some of the missing women were. Kimberly is pregnant with what sounded like to her second child! I love that I see so many pregnant women at Healthworks that have bodies that rock. I swear they are all stronger than I am and I am not carrying a human being inside of me! I use them as inspiration for me to workout when I am at that point in my life.
The class alternated strength and cardio circuits which allowed us to burn calories but also strengthen. My favorite moves were with the Pilates ring…probably because I love workout accessories…and really have been wanting a ring…yup I went there haha. Anyway-I might end up investing in my own so that I can do some Pilates at home!
Throughout the class, I was having some trouble with some of the form but Kimberly was really good at coming over to correct me and also give me some modifications to make some of the moves more difficult. I also learned that my elbows are a little hyperextended. Kimberly had said, “You have really flexible elbows!” She corrected my form so that I don’t hurt my arms. I had realized this might be why I was good at volleyball and making a good platform for the ball to bounce off off. It might also be the reason why sometimes my wrists and elbows feel funny after some yoga sessions.
The class worked mostly my arms and abs, so I am hoping my performance tonight won’t sacrifice too much-we will find out! Even if it does…this challenge wasn’t necessarily to just WIN the actually challenge but to form good habits and learn how you can push yourself physically and mentally. Either way-cheeseball line-I think I’ve won!
What is a new workout you have recently tried?
I have tried SO many new workouts since this challenge has started. I have learned that I really like strength training and Pilates. Each time I learn more about Pilates, I get more excited about how tone I am going to get and becoming better at it. I don’t think my marathon training will EVER be the same now that I’ve found my new loves!
Has making working out a habit for you changed your life?
More than anything! Working out helps me learn so much about myself as a person, especially how much I grow and mature. Trying to fit in workouts helps me stay efficient and organized. And throughout the years, I realized that I have grown to be more open minded and confident thanks to marathon training, yoga, CrossFit, Pilates…and the list will continue to grow!
