Dave always teases me that I have one expensive ornament in our hallway (where my bike lives ever since the Pumpkinman Half Ironman). I give him some ‘tude back and asked with a sad face, “Are you trying to make me feel bad about my hips?” Last time I tried biking for a few days, my hip muscles tightened up a lot. I think I’ll be better now that I’ve strengthened my hips and have been practicing yoga more consistently.
Dave should be happy to know that I’ll finally get to make use of this bike again because I am officially signed up for the Pan Mass Challenge (PMC)! If you haven’t heard of the PMC before, it is a ride up to 192 miles over two days to raise money for cancer research and treatment through Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
My work has participated in the PMC since I’ve been here and it was always something I wanted to do. I never made the plunge to sign up because I always was hesitant to add something that big to my plate when I was focused on marathon training. When I made the plunge, I knew that I wanted to go at it whole-heartily. Now that I’m in recovery mode from my hip injury, I figured this would be a perfect time to participate in the PMC. I’m totally ready for the 192 ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown, fighting the cancer beast!
This is my first fundraising event and I am really excited about doing it or such a great cause. When Dave and I watched the New Year’s Eve shows, they had gone over the deaths of the past year. It was depressing how many of these deaths were to cancer. It reminded me that pretty much everyone knows at least one person personally who has had cancer. And just think about all the people that you don’t know or might not get the chance to meet that have or had cancer. That is why every dollar counts!
I’ve got a hefty goal of $4300 to raise, but I know I can do it! I’m thinking for every donation I get, I’ll post a fun pic, video, or blog post dedicated to you!
So if you have a moment, please visit my fundraising page here and donate! Even if it is ONE dollar! Once you to my page and try to donate, search for Jessica Miller from Somerville, MA. Thank you so much!
Need a little pic teaser? Here is a pic of me when I got my first pair of bike shorts…
…and there will be plenty more interesting and fun pics to come! Just donate and enjoy!
If fun pics and blog posts don’t tickle your fancy, my coworkers and I have a ton of fun events that we will be planning to help raise money. Some of these great events include a poker tournament, a happy hour at a local bar, a spin-a-thon, bake sales, and our infamous auction with some great items! If you are in the Boston area, you should definitely make it out. Then, I can also meet you!
In addition to helping fight cancer, I’m also excited about training on the bike with my coworkers and building some new friendships. I think one of my favorite things about branching out from my running is building those friendships with people who don’t like running as much.
Have you ever done any long rides?
I did some 50 milers when I was training for the Pumpkinman Half Ironman but nothing more than that!
Do you have any favorite bike routes in the Boston area?
Not yet-but I’m sure I will soon!
Have you ever raised money for a cause? If so, what cause and why?
I have always wanted to raise money for a cause, but I was waiting to find one that felt right. I didn’t want to pressure my friends and family to have to donate multiple times so I am glad I held off until now! Now I can go big at this one event!
