Blogger Ice Cream Social at J.P. Licks

March 12, 2014

I don’t know if you know this about me, but ice cream is one of my favorite things ever.  As much as I love baking cupcakes, I would take a huge bowl of ice cream over a cupcake any day!

When I saw that Jessica from Gluten Free Boston Girl was organizing an event at J.P. Licks I jumped on it fast.  However, not fast enough.  The class filled but thankfully a spot opened up a few days before the event!

J.P. Licks opened up by locals in Jamaica Plain in 1981.  They are mostly widely known for high quality ice cream and innovative, unique flavors.  They also have a really tasty hot chocolate.  I’ve heard this from many people but have not yet to try it myself.  I will have to do that before spring really hits.

Taste Testing

J.P. Licks technically let’s you taste test whatever you want, but you have to admit that you normally feel guilty if you taste test too many. That is why this event was great-you could have guilt-free tasting of whatever you wanted AND a free kiddie cup of your flavor of choice.  Here are the flavors that I ended up testing:

  • Madagascar vanilla coconut (coconut based no dairy)
  • Cookies and Cream Hemp
  • Leprechauns Brew (with Sam Adams beer)
  • Thin Mint
  • Coconut Almond Chip
  • Jameson Irish Coffee
  • Baileys Chocolate Chip Cheesecake
  • Cow Tracks (Vanilla, fudge, and peanut butter cups)
  • Brownie Brownie Batter
  • Orange Irish
  • Pralines and Creme
  • Cookie (soft yogurt)

I chose the coconut almond chip as my kiddie cup because I’m currently on a coconut craze.  I also really liked the Madagascar vanilla coconut because it just tasted so fresh, light and simple.  The Jameson Irish coffee was another favorite because I love my coffee.  If you are a chocolate chip cookie fan, try the soft yogurt “cookie” flavor.  It’s not a cookies ‘n cream, it really does taste like chocolate chip cookie!

{Ice Cream Fun Fact:  If you put alcohol in ice cream, it won’t freeze as well, so it will be softer ice cream.}

Allergy Friendly

J.P. Licks has a lot of flavors to try but also options for those with a more restrictive diet.  They have a pretty extensive list of gluten-free flavors, a few vegan options and the ingredients list for those who may have a more unique allergies.

J.P. Licks employees are very aware when someone tells them they have an allergy.  They have a nut-free section and will use a new, clean scoop and even scoop from a new container.

For those who are curious about calories they will be consuming, you can check out the general nutritional information.

Monthly Flavors

J.P. Licks team experiments each month to find what the next best flavors will be and adds these to the new monthly flavors.  I usually try to get one of these whenever I go since they are only there for that month.  If I fall in love with a monthly flavor, I try to get it a lot before the next month’s flavors come out.

Get a Cow Card

Every time you get something at J.P. Licks, you earn one point for every dollar.  For every 50 points, you will receive a $5 reward towards anything at J.P. Licks (not just the ice cream!).  I like this card because you can check your account online and they now also have an iPhone and Android app!

Coffee Roasting and Baked Goods

Did you know that J.P. Licks is also well known for their home-roasted coffee and homemade baked goods?!  The motivation behind serving coffee was that the founders couldn’t find the happy medium between Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts.  So they decided to brew their own coffee.  They are part of a Guatemala Co-operative, purchase Fair Trade Certified Organic Coffees, and roast their own beans right in J.P.

Jessica from Gluten Free Boston Girl said that she often will go to J.P. Licks versus Starbucks on her way to work.  Bonus points is that every J.P. Licks has their very own espresso bar.  Dave too will skip Starbucks because J.P. Licks makes a mean Americano and Dave likes his coffee strong!

Delivery!

What is better than having delicious food?  Having delicious food delivered to you!  That’s why my coworkers and I had Union Square Donuts delivered to us a few weeks ago.  And now we may need to have some J.P. Licks breakfast catering and ice cream parties (details of what is included here) delivered to us!
