In case you couldn’t tell, I am riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge this year! I attempted it 2 years ago but only was able to fundraise not ride. Short version–unfortunately I was born with a twisted intestine (and had no idea) and the weekend before I was in intense pain and had to go into the ER. They operated on me that weekend and I had to miss out on the Pan-Mass. Read more about my story here!
After being emotionally exhausted from doing all the fundraising but not being able to experience the ride while also studying for my Professional Engineering exam, I decided I needed to to take 2014 off from attempting the PMC again. But once 2015 rolled around, I knew it was time. It also was my (now former) company’s 10th year of riding and they were trying to get 10 riders for the team.
Since we have 10 riders, we have a hefty goal of $45,000 to raise. My TROJB team is raising a lot of money but still have a ways to go. Where does the money go? Here is the core mission of the PMC:
Raising money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is the core of the PMC mission. Since 2007, 100% of every dollar PMC cyclists raised goes directly to the Jimmy Fund. Since 1980, the PMC has contributed $455 million, which finances research in its earliest stages. Known as “seed money”, PMC funds enable clinicians and scientists to pursue innovative research that has the potential to achieve the results that will warrant National Institutes of Health (NIH), or other private and government grants. In so many cases, this early support has fostered the development of some of the most important advances made in cancer research.
This year the team has a Pedal Partner so it makes the ride even more special to us. If a team chooses, they can be paired up with a Pedal Partner. A Pedal Partner is a someone who is undergoing some of the more advanced treatments and care as a result of the funds raised by the PMC. During the ride, pictures of Pedal Partners are placed along the bike routes for riders and spectators to see. I’ve heard that riding by them can be really a really emotional experience.
My team met our pedal partner Max and it was really inspiring to learn his story and also what the Jimmy Fund has done for him. Max was diagnosed with cancer his second week into his freshman year at college. With the help of The Jimmy Fund and the Children’s Hospital, he was able to stay in the hospital for only 52 days (whereas typically people may have to stay for 6 months) and he was able to still complete his first semester of college. Max is so positive, enthusiastic and excited about spreading the word about how great The Jimmy Fund experience has been for him and his family. Here Max (in the blue button down) is with my PMC team at our annual PMC auction!
Although my team is doing a great job at raising money through events we have hosted thus far (an auction, happy hour, spinning class, bake sales, etc.), we still have a lot more to raise. We will probably have more events I can keep you updated with, but here are a few I’d love for you to attend!
