A few months ago I was asked to try out Spotify Running. There are some people who are really against running with music and some who can’t run without it. Where do I stand?
Well…I’ve been through a few phases with my feelings on running with music…
Can’t Live Without It
I started out as a casual runner. I ran maybe 3-4 miles and one to two 5ks. I always ran with music. I still remember running by the Charles River with Muse’s Black Holes and Revelations on repeat.
“Too Serious” For Music
Before training for my first marathon (and really my first big race ever…), I read Hal Higdon’s Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide. I believe it was in there that I read that it is good not to run with music. No music mean that you focused on listening to your body versus run to the beat of the music. I was a running “purist” and didn’t list to music for any running after that.
Can’t live without it
After my 3 year sabbatical from running due to injury, I needed music to get me motivated to get out there. If I didn’t have the music, I would focus on how much running sucked to me at that moment. I even ran my first half marathon back with music!
When The Mood is Right
Now that I am getting back into running more consistently, I have been having a mixture of runs with music and runs just to listen to my body. Although I ran my first half marathon back to music, I think that I’ll likely not run longer distance races with music but will still run fun runs or shorter distances with it.
