I love my fitness classes but if you read about my struggle with balancing fitness classes and running–if I have a class pack in my possession, I get stuck attending classes and sacrificing my running. Because of my history with hip overuse injury, it’s really important for me to strength train. This is why I think I might try Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide (BBG).
I purchased this guide a long time ago and have tried a workout every now and then, but I haven’t done the full series. Although I don’t really like the name “Bikini Body Guide”, I’ve heard a lot of people love the workouts and have seen results and I like the idea of half an hour workouts that could really compliment my running.
I’m a little worried about getting bored with the way the workouts are formatted but I’ve heard that you can keep yourself intrigued by focusing on how your form improves. I may also need to find a good pair of wireless headphones to listen to some music to keep me distracted!
These workouts are designed to be done at home or anywhere but you do need to have some equipment (bosu ball, weights, jump rope, sturdy workout bench). As you get further into the workouts it looks like you need 2 workout benches so you can do some jumping up onto both. Because I typically like to workout early mornings near work (my apartment is ~30 min train ride away) and my apartment is a house with others where my jumping could be disruptive early in the morning–doing the workouts inside a gym seems like a good idea. I was a member of Everybody Fights (EBF) Seaport for a little while and then also EBF FIDI (through GILT), but I’m no longer a member anywhere.
I have been booking some gym time through ClassPass but since I’m on hold that only gets me one session a month. I have done a few drop in (you can buy single classes through ClassPass these days!) but I think a gym membership is a little more ideal if I’m planning on running more frequently or trying to get into a space to do the BBG workouts. I value fitness and it makes me happy but Dave and I are just bought a car and are trying to save money so I can’t really justify spending $180/month at Equinox (ugh–their gym is beautiful). I’ve been contemplating BSC because it’s more affordable or Republic Fitness because they are both pretty close to my work. Republic is a nicer facility but that also means more expensive. I am paying for a month of BSC because it is the cheaper option and will see how that goes. I’m going to think about it a little more before I pull the trigger on anything longer term…(What do you all do? Anyone want to be a BBG buddy with me?)
This morning I completed day 1 of the pre-training week 1 today (woohoo!). My goal is to get through the full 4 weeks of pre-training and move forward with the 12 weeks of the full training. I don’t plan on following the Health Eating and Lifestyle Plan (HELP) that Kayla provides but plan on trying to be more conscious of what I’m putting into my body. I may change my mind a little later and try to follow her plan but I am trying not to take on too much at once because I know that will set me up for failure!
My Portland, OR marathon training will start the beginning of June so I’m not sure how my hopes of completing BBG may affect this, but hopefully starting BBG in advance will mean it’s not too bad! I know that I’ll miss the community that is within the fitness class world–but I also know that there is supposed to be a strong community within the BBG world!
