When the earthquake hit Haiti January 12, 2010, many suffered. According to Boston.com it was a 7.0 and the worst earthquake in 200 years. In that earthquake, 19 year old Britney Gengel who attended Lynn University and was originaly from Rutland, MA, was missing in the remains of her hotel. The family was mislead by a photo of a dark haired woman who they thought was to be their Britney, but unfortunately was not. Britney had passed away (see more on the story from abc news).
In honor of their daugther and to fulfill one of her dreams, the family is building an orphanage in Haiti. I am lucky to be able to volunteer to help the Gengel Family reach Britney’s dream. Their mission is as follows:
“They love us so much and everyone is so happy, they love what they have and they work so hard to get no where and they are all so appreciative… I want to move here and start an orphange.” Britney sent this to her mom, three hours before the earthquake hit. For the poorest of the poor, Be Like Brit is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the children of Haiti. Be Like Brit will continue the compassionate life and legacy of Britney Gengel by establishing a safe, nurturing and sustainable orphanage in an environment where children can grow, learn and thrive.
- How are we going to install the panels?
- Which panels are we going to use? There are so many types. What are the ones already used in Haiti?
- Which batteries are best for storing the energy? Where will we put them?
- How will we get the panels and supplies to Haiti without them being stolen?
Any help with any part of the project is appreciated. Please feel free to share ideas or connections so that we can help the Haitians as well as honor Britney Gengel.
