I had to take a cab to Logan this morning. Last time I took a cab from Boston Cab the driver was cheery, talkative and enjoyable. He helped me get my bag out when I got to the airport and wished me a happy trip.
This morning-yes I got picked up early but I was the same time as last time-actually it was later! The driver didn’t even say hi-I had to initiate “Good morning how are you?” and he whispers “ok”. He tosses my bag in the trunk and the silent treatment begins.
We get to the airport and I ask to use the credit card machine. I have the option of picking 20% tip of $3 or other. Typically I do a 20% tip but I should have done $1 or zip! I finished paying, the driver opens the trunk, and then proceeded to pretend to be fiddling with something in the front seat. I get out and say thanks-get my luggage out of the trunk and head into the airport.
Maybe I’m lazy and don’t want to get my bag, but isn’t that what the tip is for? If I were just paying for the drive then I shouldn’t have to tip. I definitely have taken a lot of my other can drivers for granted! As they say-you never know what you’ve got until you lose it. Luckily I will still be able to have good cab drivers and I’ll appreciate them. It’s the little things that matter-the good morning and smile, the small talk the helping with the bag, the happy travel wishes. Yes it may be a standard routine-maybe it’s repetitive, but I think it is worth it for the customer. Maybe it isn’t $3 wasted? I think it was actually a good thing because I gained some appreciation for those nice cab drivers!
